Who We Are

Charleston Sound Chorus focuses on educating, entertaining, and competing within the highly competitive organization of Sweet Adelines International.

Under the direction of David Templeton, the members of Charleston Sound Chorus intertwine vocal technique and a high level of musicality to form a tight-knit, four-part acapella ensemble. Charleston Sound approaches a variety of styles — from classical to showtunes — with the same sense of musical excellence throughout.

So what makes it barbershop? In a nutshell, the position of the melody line and the chord structure. In most choral settings, the melody line is presented as the highest note of the chord, but in barbershop, it is in the middle of the chord. Without going into too much detail, barbershop music uses the unique dominant 7th in their tight harmonies. But honestly, the music theory doesn’t matter; it’s all about creating an overtone that rings above any sung note. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Come and experience it for yourself!
